There are a few different ways to communicate with other Magma users and participants of a canvas. We have on-canvas calls and chat, but also direct messages, and Artspace chat.
Voice calls for Artspaces at DMs are planned but not available yet. You may use the call function on the canvas.
Direct Messages
Sometimes you just want to hang out and chat with someone or plan your next drawing privately without having to go onto a canvas.
If someone you do not follow sends you a message, you will first receive a message request where you can block, ignore, or accept the message to continue chatting.
IMPORTANT: We recommend being very cautious when receiving messages from people that you do not know. Always check their profile first, do not share personal information, and do not click on any links unless you are sure that you can trust them. View our tips for internet safety here.
On-Canvas chat
You can chat with other users on the canvas with you but opening the chat window. Tap on the speech bubble icon in the bottom right next to the settings panel, or use the shortcut: Enter.
Voice and Video Calls
We've also got voice and video calls built into the canvas and DMs to make it easier for you to collaborate with your friends.
For canvases, you'll find the call button in communcations bar:
When a voice call is active on the canvas, the call button is green. Once you join, new sections are added to the communications bar showing you who is in the chat and giving you various settings.
- open additional settings : change voice and video inputs
- deafen : mutes others for you only
- mute : mutes your own microphone
- video/camera : enables video for the call (Blaze only)
- screenshare : opens screensharing options
For DMs, the call option is at the top of the chat window:
Users can only start a call with you if you have accepted their message request.
Permissions
As a canvas owner, you can control who is able to start or join calls by adjusting the permissions in the Admin menu. You can find out more about microphone and call permissions in our guide which also covers device access for the browser.
If you are not able to join or start a call, you might have to ask the canvas owner to grant permission. Keep in mind that for non-Blaze users, you can only join one-on-one calls and will be limited to voice calls only.
Camera and Screensharing is reserved for our Blaze users. Read more about our camera and screensharing features in the guide.
Comment tool
The comment tool will pin a comment thread to your canvas. Unlike the chat window, the comment tool stores your conversation across sessions.
Tagging
You can tag other users in a comment by using the @ symbol followed by the username.
When tagging a person in a comment, they will receive a notification in the app and an email.
