Adding blur to your artwork can be an helpful way to bring more depth to your artwork, emphasize focal points, and even suggest movement. Check out our guide below for how to use the Gaussian Blur and Motion Blur filters available in Magma.

Gaussian Blur

Th gaussian blur filter spreads the pixels on a layer outward. It does this evenly based on the radius you set. The higher the radius is, the more blurry your layer will appear.

To add gaussian blur to your layer

  1. Open the Filter menu at the top of your canvas and select Gaussian Blur;

  2. Adjust the radius slider. Drag the slider to the right to increase the amount of blur;

  3. Ensure that Preview is active if you want to see the result before confirming;

  4. When you’re ready, hit Save to confirm your blur.

Using Gaussian blur in your image

You can use this blur filter to help focus your image by blurring out certain areas like the background. If your background is on a separate layer, this is easy. But what if everything is on the same layer?

The best way to approach this is to:

  1. Duplicate your current layer;

  2. Apply the blur filter to the new layer (that is above the original);

  3. Select your eraser and the Softer brush shape and make sure pressure sensitivity for the Density setting is active;

  4. Lightly erase over the area that you want to be sharper and in focus.

Motion blur

The motion blur filter will add linear blur at a specified angle to suggest movement or speed. You can increase the amount of blur by increasing the distance.

To add motion blur to your layer

  1. Open the Filter menu at the top of your canvas and select Motion Blur;

  2. Adjust the distance slider. Drag the slider to the right to increase the amount of motion blur;

  3. Change the direction of your blur either with the dial or with inputting into the Angle box;

  4. Ensure that Preview is active if you want to see the result before confirming;

  5. When you’re ready, hit Save to confirm your blur.

Performance note: Using the blur filters can be quite strenuous on some devices. Be sure to test with smaller radius and distance. You can also turn off the Preview setting.
