Managing your Canvas - permissions, roles and participants

This guide covers the basics of managing your canvas including changing permissions, assigning roles, and handling participants

Written by Ryan

Magma has various features to help you keep your canvas secure and manage difficult situations. If you're just drawing on a private canvas, you don't have to worry too much about this. But, if you are inviting friends to join you for a drawing session or hosting an Art Jam, it's important to know about these.

Canvas Permissions

When you create a new canvas, you can set various permissions for features and actions based on a role system. It's best to adjust these permissions before inviting others to your canvas to avoid any issues.

The Participants List

When new users join your canvas, you'll see their avatars appear in the top right corner of the UI. When you tap on the avatars, a new pop-up appears with a full list of everyone that has joined your canvas so far, whether they are on the board or not.

Assigning roles

When adjusting canvas permissions, you might also want to assign roles to specific users. You can change the roles by opening the Participants List, then the three dot's next to someone's name. A menu will appear where you can perform different actions including assigning roles.

People you trust might get the Approved role, allowing them to create new layers and paste images in the chat for example. The Admin role should only be given to people helping you to manage the canvas. Anyone with the Admin role can change the canvas permissions and assign different roles to other users.

Blocking users

If you need to remove someone from the canvas, you can search or them in the Participant's List. Then tap the three dots next to their name to open the action menu, then select Kick and Block (or just Block if they aren't on the canvas anymore).

Canvas communication

There are different ways to communicate on a canvas:

  • Chat window

  • Voice calls

  • and Comment threads

Each of these have permissions in the Admin menu that you can adjust as you need to. When it comes to moderating, admins also have the ability to remove certain chat messages if they are harmful or offensive.

Reporting users

In some cases, you might feel that it is necessary to report a user's behaviour. You can report profiles through the Participant's List. It's important to give adequate detail when reporting.

If you need to report a chat message, you can open the menu for the message and select the report option.
