Liquify

This guide covers the basic of the Liquify tool in Magma.

Written by Ryan

Liquify lets you push, pull, and distort parts of your layer with a brush-like tool. This is great for making adjustments to features in a portrait, for example, or making small changes to the posing of your character's limbs or fixing proportions.

For now, this is a standard push-type liquify tool that pushes pixels following the direction of your pen stroke.

You can find the Liquify tool in your left toolbar or use the shortcut J. If you are in Super Simple Mode, the Liquify tool is grouped with the Blend tool. Long-press on the Blend to open the menu for selecting Liquify.

Liquify settings

When you select the Liquify tool, you’ll have multiple settings to adjust. If you are in Simple mode, only the size setting will be visible. We recommend changing to Full or Super Simple Mode.

  • Size - Adjust the size of the liquify tool. The size ratio button will give you three different size limits of 10px, 100px, and 500px. You can go further by using the shortcuts for size increase. Size can also respond to pen pressure.;

  • Min size - If you are using a pressure-sensitive pen, and the pressure setting is on, the min size setting sets a limit for how small the tool can get with light pressure;

  • Stabilizer - this stabilizes the stroke and is especially useful if your hands are unsteady or you are using a mouse;

  • Stretch - This determines how far pixels will move from the starting point. A higher stretch setting will pull the pixels much further. This setting can also be pressure sensitive;

  • Hardness - A higher hardness value will make the liquify stroke much sharper. If you reduce the value, the brush has a softer edge and allows for more subtle adjustments.

You can use the liquify on a single layer only, and it can be used in combination wth selection tools.
