We’ve been working on implementing a Licensing feature to help you protect your artworks from unauthorized use and AI training.
We’re starting with a small selection of licenses; when publishing your artwork to your Magma Feed or Profile Gallery, you will be able to choose one of three available options:
Publish artwork under default “All right reserved” license as described in our Terms of Use
Or pick one of available remixing licenses:
💡 Please note that both the Licensing feature as well as Story integration feature are currently in Beta. If you encounter any bugs, unexpected behaviour, or even discomfort in the flow, please do let us know.
First: a note on remixing
Choosing a remixing license will give other artists opportunity to build upon your work in non-commercial purposes, while giving credit to original author.
To encourage collaboration and more interaction between artists, we are busy adding the ability to remix artworks that will be available for any artwork registered under license that allows remixing. We are planning to fully support a flow where other users will be able to create a copy of your artwork to edit and add to. In the example above, we have a sticker template where other users are invited to add their characters to it to explain the intent behind the planned remixing feature.
Additionally, the current License registration we are testing is intended to make it clear what that remixable work may and may not be used for. The View Terms button will have more info on this.
Posting your artwork
Here is what the flow will look like if you want to publish and register an artwork:
Open up a Magma canvas and create your artwork. This does not need to be a finished piece. A quick sketch or some squiggles would be perfectly fine for this testing.
Tap on the blue Share button and then Post Selection (You can also use Publish to Gallery if your drawing is the only one on the canvas).
Input the information about your artwork and then Post
A new window will appear here. Choose if you want to allow your work for remixing. Skip will close the dialogue and no license will be assigned.
Tap Allow remixing and choose the desired license for your artwork. Then proceed with the post.
When a post involves multiple authors, those users will be notified first about the registration request and be asked to approve or deny a remixing license request before license is attached to an artwork. If this happens, you will see a status information that will change as soon as other users provide their approval.
After posting the artwork, and after any pending approvals from co-authors, a blue toast will appear in the bottom left of your screen to let you know that the registration was successful and that the canvas has new licensing terms applied to a part of it. (In our example it applies to the whole canvas)
You’ll also notice a new License button in the top right where you can view all licenses that apply to this canvas. One canvas can have multiple licenses related to various revisions of the artwork. Consider a multi-user canvas where each user posts only their drawing in a specific part of the canvas, or one canvas where have multiple drawings that you want to register individually.
Repeat the posting steps but this time do a Creative Commons license. Then tap on the License button to view. Here it will show the selected areas that were registered and for which license.
Tap the View On Story button to see your registered artwork on the Story Protocol platform.
Story Integration
We decided to integrate with Story because we share a belief in empowering creators. Story is building essential infrastructure to ensure that original IP is traceable, credited, and owned—every time it's used by others, whether individuals or companies. This aligns with Magma’s mission to make collaboration fair, transparent, and creator-first.

When you choose a Story license, we automatically create a wallet for you and register the artwork on the Story’s ledger. This ledger is used to track the creation and use of all registered IP. You don’t need any web3 knowledge — the entire setup happens behind the scenes.
Before launching the integration publicly, we’ll also give anyone an option to access and manage their web3 data directly and transfer assets registered via Magma to their own wallet if they prefer so.
Once your post with a Story license is approved and registered, it will also be visible on Story Portal. You can tap the View on Story button to view it along with license details, and any derivative works registered on Story platform.
Please note that in some cases you might notice that your post might initially be blurred with Sensitive Content spoiler due to automated security checks — this should resolver over time.
Viewing the artwork in your Gallery
You’ll notice in your Gallery overview, that artworks with pending licenses will have little bubble on them. This will say In Review if waiting for other users to approve or Reviewed once it is submitted to Story Protocol and awaiting registration.
After successful registration, the bubble on the thumbnail is removed. Tapping on the artwork to open the full preview, you can see the current status and license info below the description.
When registration fails
If the registration failed, then this will be shown instead:
If this happens, the same notification will appear as a bubble on your thumbnail of the image in the gallery overview. You can try again by tapping View Canvas to open the Editor for the drawing, then License, and Retry — or you can cancel the registration altogether.
